Dynamic video messaging tools like Loom are emerging as an alternative way to improve communication. We explore the topic and offer practical advice to get started.

Effective communication is a hot topic and will remain so for the foreseeable future. It's a critical requirement of remote working, mainly where teams are located in different countries and time zones and work asynchronously. Still, it takes work to create a culture that supports this way of working and maintains it for ongoing success, and the technology we use can play a significant part.
Atlassian recently unveiled a concept called 'system of work', 'A philosophy of how it believes technology-driven organisations should work, connecting technology and business teams to accelerate progress and maximise team impact,' is designed to enhance collaboration, productivity, and efficiency within teams. Through this approach to work management, businesses continue to seek complementary tools and integrations to offer their teams to keep them communicating well. Many are now looking to dynamic video messaging tools as an alternative way to improve internal and external communication.
This blog examines the capabilities and benefits of Loom, a video messaging tool recently added to the Atlassian ecosystem. We'll explore how Loom video messaging can facilitate effective communication and provide practical advice on how to get started.

What is Loom?

Loom is an asynchronous video messaging tool fully integrated into the Atlassian ecosystem. With Loom, you can quickly and easily pre-record messages from your screen and camera.
This type of messaging allows companies to communicate effectively without creating long text messages, writing complicated instructions, or arranging real-time meetings.
Teams have started adopting Loom, which has an intuitive, easy-to-learn interface and a range of AI-powered features, including fully customisable workflows and automatic video enhancement, transcription, Jira ticket reporting, and instant text messaging.

Getting started with Loom

Once Loom is installed on your device, you can begin recording video messages immediately. Users can record video and audio from their screen or webcam on MacOS, Windows, Chrome, iOS, and Android devices. Rewinding and re-recording can be done in real time, eliminating the need for multiple takes.
Advanced video editing tools allow users to manually edit, splice, and trim Loom videos.
Once a video message is recorded, the file automatically uploads to the cloud, and a shareable link is immediately available on the screen within Loom. The recordings can be shared across hundreds of popular platforms, including monday.com, Asana, Slack, Gmail, Notion and the full Atlassian ecosystem (more in the next section).
Loom's AI features automatically apply sophisticated enhancements to recordings, like removing long pauses and filler words. It uses AI to automatically generate transcripts and captions in over 50 languages, making communicating with multilingual remote teams easier.
Users can generate transcriptions to create user guides, feedback for code or design reviews, or populate issue details in Jira or other tools like Linear. Viewers can leave comments, reactions, emojis or links to provide interactive video feedback. Loom's settings ensure that company and customer data is kept secure with Single Sign-On (SSO), SCIM, and customisable data retention and privacy settings.

Using Loom day-to-day

Loom can be a standalone tool, with videos shared via links to other platforms. Loom is also a valuable addition to the Atlassian ecosystem, enhancing the capability of tools like Jira and Confluence.

Loom with Jira

Technical users, including developers and project managers, platform engineers, UX/UI designers, and remote business teams, can use Loom to create video explanations of complex issues or bugs within the Jira interface. These videos can be added to specific issues as comments or descriptions, providing more context than text alone.

For business users, Loom can enhance communication between internal and external stakeholders, for example, by briefing a project and explaining requirements in detail, which can help team members understand problems quickly and accurately. Marketers can offer feedback on a document or creative assets without lengthy email threads, reducing the potential for misunderstanding.

Loom supports visual feedback; for example, QA teams can record videos to show where and how an issue occurs, making it easier for developers to replicate and resolve the problem, such as defects and requirements mapping. For service managers resolving incidents, they can use Loom to visually share a bug, making it much quicker and easier for problem management to resolve issues.

For sprint reviews or project meetings, teams can use Loom to record sprint reviews or retrospectives, allowing stakeholders who couldn't attend to catch up asynchronously.

Loom with Confluence

Team members can record and insert their Loom videos directly within Confluence pages to provide visual tutorials, walkthroughs, or demonstrations, making documentation more engaging and easier to understand. Managers can use Loom to record and share updates or announcements with their teams, adding a personal touch that can be more engaging than written text. It's also useful for training and onboarding new team members. If you can build a library of Loom videos within Confluence, it helps new members of the team learn about company processes, tools, and culture at their own pace.

Is Loom for you?

Loom can be a valuable addition to your daily operations by adding a personal touch to updates and explanations that might have been missed or misinterpreted. They are a great addition if you already have Jira and Confluence among your most used tools. We hope this blog provided a useful introduction and we’re happy to help you learn more.
