This year, AWS unveiled a multitude of new features, with a significant focus on expanding its suite of Generative AI offerings. With announcements from Atlassian, GitLab, and many more–AWS is making significant investments to help customers maximise the benefits of their cloud adoption.

Celebrating its 13th year, AWS re:Invent 2024 hosted nearly 60,000 attendees in Las Vegas, with an additional 400,000 tuning in online to catch the latest announcements and insights from over 3,500 speakers across 1,900 sessions. Customers from across The Adaptavist Group benefited from the week's announcements, and through our partnerships with Atlassian, AWS, and GitLab, we are empowered to help them maximise the potential of the platforms that drive their businesses.

Atlassian and AWS strategic collaboration to accelerate cloud adoption

Atlassian and AWS have announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the adoption of Atlassian Cloud for organisations that have yet to transition. As longstanding technical partners, AWS and Atlassian are collaborating to migrate millions of enterprise users to the cloud.
Businesses currently using Atlassian can offset the costs of migrating complex infrastructure through funding supported by a Cloud Center of Excellence. Adaptavist customers can leverage the significant offers from AWS and Atlassian through our strong partnership relationship. Together, AWS and Atlassian are committed to delivering the most secure, collaborative, and technologically advanced platform on the market, and Adaptavist is dedicated to helping customers maximise their investment.

AWS and GitLab unveil AI integration for enhanced developer productivity

AWS and GitLab have introduced GitLab Duo with Amazon Q Developer, a transformative AI-powered integration that enhances software development by embedding advanced agent capabilities directly into GitLab's DevSecOps platform. This integration not only streamlines workflows but also represents a significant leap over current development practices by automating the mundane aspects of coding. It allows developers to move from new feature ideas to merge-ready code quickly and will write code for you, generating unit tests for consistent quality assurance. Enhanced AI-driven code quality and security reviews accelerate feedback cycles and ensure robust applications. Additionally, the ability to upgrade legacy Java codebases directly from GitLab improves application security and performance.
For Adaptavist customers, these advancements lead to faster development cycles, improved code quality, and a more agile response to market demands. What resonates most with customers is the automation of the repetitive aspects of development, freeing developers to focus on more innovative tasks.

Empowering businesses with Amazon Q Business

Amazon Q Business emerges as an AI-powered assistant designed to leverage a company's internal data securely. By indexing data from various tools like Jira and Slack, it empowers the workforce to be more productive using GenAI. The combination of Quicksight Q and Amazon Q Business data facilitates quick data summarisation, and ISVs can now integrate with the Amazon Q index.
For customers using Atlassian tools like Jira Service Management or Opsgenie, the new Q models present an exciting opportunity to enhance operational efficiency. By integrating these models with Atlassian's suite, businesses can achieve a level of automation and intelligence similar to what PagerDuty offers. This integration allows for proactive incident management, streamlined workflows, and improved response times, ensuring that our customers can deliver exceptional service and maintain operational resilience.

Significant re:Invent releases worth reading up on

  • DynamoDB–Amazon DynamoDB has reduced prices for on-demand throughput by 50 percent and global tables by up to 67 percent, making it more cost-effective for serverless applications. This change benefits customers by lowering costs for both spiky and consistent workloads, enhancing scalability and resilience while simplifying cost modelling for multi-region applications. In addition Amazon DynamoDB global tables now support multi-region strong consistency in preview, enabling highly available applications with zero RPO. This feature allows applications to read the latest data version from any region, ideal for consistency-critical uses like user profiles and financial transactions.
  • Aurora and DSQL–AWS announced the preview of Amazon Aurora DSQL, a serverless, distributed SQL database offering active-active high availability. It provides effortless scaling, 99.999 percent multi-region availability, and strong consistency. Compatible with PostgreSQL, it ensures seamless scaling and resiliency for applications. It is available for preview in select AWS Regions at no charge.
  • S3 and Apache Iceberg–In the realm of storage, Amazon S3 remains a cornerstone of AWS's solutions, now hosting an astounding 400 trillion objects. The introduction of Amazon S3 Tables offers a new bucket type for iceberg tables, delivering 3x faster query performance and 10x higher transactions per second, while Amazon S3 Metadata advancements enhance data management, allowing for more efficient object discovery and metadata updates.
  • EC2 and Gravitron–Amazon EC2 Trn2 instances, which provide 30-40 percent better price performance than existing GPU-based options, further demonstrate AWS's commitment to machine learning. Companies like Adobe and Databricks are already experiencing substantial cost savings and performance improvements. The new Amazon EC2 Trn2 UltraServers promise enhanced latency and performance, enabling customers to build larger training clusters.
